Semester Two Begins

Gokigenyo.
Welcome back to school. I hope you all have had a great summer vacation and are rested and ready for Semester Two. In my message at the end of the first semester, I spoke about how important a healthy body is to academic success. So I hope everyone took advantage of the summer break and enjoyed some physical activity.
Being active in your learning is just as important. So, what does being active in your learning mean?
First – active learners are curious. Asking yourself questions and finding the answers is motivating. Be demanding of your education and questioning of your teachers.
Second – active learners make plans. Begin to think about your aims and goals and think about how you will meet those aims and goals through what you learn at school.
Third – active learners are hard-working. Do not be passive about your learning, be thoughtful, and aware. Go beyond the requirements and do more. Find the joy in learning new things.
Fourth – active learners do not fear failure. We learn when we push to the limits of our understanding. Finding what is not true is just as important as learning what is true. Learning how not to do something is just as important as learning how to do something.
We learn in many ways, but one of the best ways is by engaging with your studies with your classmates. We learn through communicating our knowledge with others. It is through communicating our learning that it becomes truly meaningful. And this is why an active learner is an active teacher. An active learner is able to take knowledge, analyze it, paraphrase it, make it easier for others to understand – and to pass it on to the next learner. Classrooms at Kanto should be a sharing community full of engaged learners becoming teachers.
This is a big semester for all of us as we will be welcoming delegates from all over the world to World School. As you know, this year World School will be held at Katsuura in October. In addition to the World School Event, our guests will be at this year’s school festival. As a result, all of you will have the chance to meet and talk to young people, just like you, from every corner of the world. Let us be true to our school name. Let’s show our guests how international Kanto can be.
Gokigenyo.

End of Semester Message

Gokigenyo.
It has been only a few short months from when I welcomed you to the beginning of the school year, and now it is already the end of the semester. Exams finished a few days ago but every day I see students coming to school for sports activities. And from tomorrow, we will see more of you coming in for summer lessons. I am also sure that many of your teachers have given you summer homework. Studies are important, but an active body is important for an active mind. What are you doing to promote a strong healthy body? Along with your studies, I hope you are enjoying having some extra time to yourself, and that you are using that time to be outside and active, whether that is at the beach, or playing futsal with your friends or by going to the park.
On July 26, we were visited by two members of the Tokyo Fire department of the Toshima Division. Shobocho Toshima no Uematsu presented the highest Civilian Award for distinguished service to one of our teachers. On July 10, Ms. Yoshizaki was on the train when she saw a young man fall to the ground. Although many people were there, only Ms. Yoshizaki and her husband went to help the man. At the next station, she found an AED device and worked for 30 minutes before the Emergency Services arrived. Through her quick action and her knowledge, that young man is alive and well today.
We should all be proud of Ms. Yoshizaki. I feel fortunate to be a teacher in the same school. I only hope that if I am ever in a similar situation, I will act with the same courage and decisiveness shown by Ms. Yoshizaki.
Of course, it is fortunate that an event like this does not happen often. But I think we can all learn from this story. When she saw a problem, Yoshizaki-sensei did not stand back with the rest. She took action to help someone in trouble. When you see someone in trouble, be like Yoshizaki-sensei and help. Perhaps it is an older person who needs help, or perhaps a young person who seems lost, or even an international person who does not understand. Don’t stand back. Step forward and take action. By being such a person, in a small way, with small steps, we can help build a better world.
Finally, one native English teacher will be leaving us this semester. Mr. Keats has been our first teacher from South Africa. He taught students in Shi, Yo , Momi, Nire, Azusa, and Hinoki. Perhaps you also know Mr. Keats from the Debate Club or the English Room.
We are sad to see Mr. Keats return to Africa and wish him well. You might be happy to know that Mr. Keats will be marrying his long term fiancee. Please join me in congratulating Mr. Keats on his marriage and our best wishes for his future.
Gokigenyo.

Exchange Students Return Home

Gokigenyo.
Last week we said goodbye to our three exchange visitors from Russia. Anastasiia Rumiantceva, Anastasiaa Sverchkova and Mariia Zaitseva were with us from September 2015 and their presence enriched our lives. Their cheerful energy and spirit will be missed. Let us hope that they will remember fondly their time at Kanto. As time passes, how people feel and appreciate their life experiences grow with them. As we take on challenges, we can take pride in the knowledge of our success in meeting those challenges. At Kanto, we should be inspired by the efforts made by our Russian friends to take on the challenge of living for a year in a new culture and learning a new language. In fact, we are fortunate to have so many students like Anastasiia, Anastasiia and Mariia here at Kanto.
Gokigenyo.
